Thanks to games such as the Monster Truck Madness series and 4x4 Evolution, driving games focusing on powerful 4x4 vehicles are steadily gaining popularity. However, these games haven't yet managed to deliver a complete off-road racing experience, because they tend to confine you into fairly restrictive environments. That's not the case with Codemasters' 1nsane. Along with good graphics, a wide array of gameplay modes, and realistic control, Codemasters' 1nsane is the only 4x4 racing game to date that truly offers a sense of the freedom--and the chaos--found in real-life off-road racing. You can view the action from inside or outside of your car. 1nsane gives you the option to select from numerous single-player and multiplayer modes right from the start. In addition to standard quick-race options against the computer, the single-player mode features lots of unusual racing modes, such as jamboree, return-the-flag, gate hunt, pathfinder, capture-the-flag, and destruction zone. There's also a championship mode that lets you unlock additional vehicles and tracks based on your performance. In the jamboree mode, you must drive through a series of checkpoints scattered around each track, so it's possible to take any route that you want; however, you have to keep an eye on the topographic map at the bottom of the screen so that your vehicle doesn't encounter any impassable obstacles. Capture-the-flag is similar to jamboree, except you must be carrying the flag when you go through each checkpoint. And the only way to secure the flag is to crash into the opposing vehicle that's carrying it. Instead of using checkpoints, the return-the-flag mode places flags at random points on each track so that you must race toward the flag, capture it, and then race back to your base before any opposing vehicles steal it away from you. These modes are all equally fun, but the most entertaining is probably destruction zone. Like the old king-of-the-hill game, in destruction zone you must race to a series of designated points found on top of hills and mountains on the map. Once you're in the correct area, you have to stay there to gain as many points as possible while other cars attempt to knock you off your perch--it's not easy, and when your vehicle is knocked off, it's often difficult to get back because of the damage you've sustained.

Midtown Madness 2 is the exact opposite of the typical racing game. Instead it's the simple racer for which PC speed freaks have been praying. It looks and plays better than most console racers, and while it is definitely an arcade racer and not a full-on driving simulation, that doesn't mean you can play it with your brain in park. The only people who might have a gripe with Midtown 2 are those who played the original to death, as the sequel is only slightly improved from the original. As in the original game, Midtown 2 features wild racing through busy city streets complete with multicar pileups and citizens diving for cover.

This time the action takes place in the streets of San Francisco and London. As expected, San Francisco sports its many landmarks and famous rolling hills, which offer plenty of chances to build up speed for ludicrous stunts. Keep an eye open for the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of Fine Arts. London's tight turns and twisting streets put the emphasis on driver skill rather than flat-out speed. Landmarks include Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and Trafalgar Square. Of course, the secret to success in the Midtown games is to find unconventional shortcuts that can bring about a quick victory.

For the most part players will be racing in standard circuit and checkpoint races. Interestingly, you must unlock most of the 20 cars in the game by finishing a series of races or completing the two in-game driving schools. You can't drive our favorite car--the Aston Martin DB7--until you finish British cabby school, but once you do get it, you'll be a terror on the highways. We only wish more automobiles were available right from the start, as the performance of the cars varies as wildly as their makes and models.

First came Rollcage, a mildly innovative Wipeout-on-wheels whose hook was the ability to drive on walls and ceilings. The game had decent gameplay and an awesome soundtrack, but its short courses and frustrating grip physics diminished its lasting appeal. Now comes Rollcage Stage II, a sequel that purports to fix the previous game's flaws while offering a number of new features. Rollcage Stage II seeks to lure a thirsty racing audience with six main improvements: less frustration, lengthier tracks, more vehicles, more weapons, improved two-player support, and a ton of hidden secrets. The first Rollcage had a major problem with tire grip and surface physics. Turning backward or becoming stuck was too easy, but worse than that, spinning in circles was a common occurrence. In the sequel, developer Attention to Detail has lowered tire grip, sped up automatic centering, and increased turn responsiveness, fixing the brunt of the original's physics issues. Further, since the vehicles in Stage II center themselves quicker while upside down, the game's antigravity premise is more succinct as well. At the same time, Rollcage Stage II offers more than 60 tracks - all of which are longer and more diverse than the original's - that contain any number of alternate paths, shortcuts, and destructible terrain objects.

Xpand Rally Xtreme will contain similar content to the original Xpand Rally but in totally xtreme variation. In game, apart from well known rally cars, gamers will find super-fast GT vehicles, DTR group buggies, off-road 4x4 cars and Monster Trucks group trucks. Game will also present about 40 tracks in typical SS contests, off-road cross-country rides, and racing track races against challenging opponents. Like the original XR, game contains career mode, single races and multiplayer. It will be based on the proven Chrome Engine and players will get the ChromEd editor to create their own tracks and even game modes.
