Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

One of the tallest masonry dams of the World, the Nagarjunasagar Dam in Hyderabad supplies water and irrigates over 10 lakh acres of land in Guntur, Prakasam, Nalgonda, Khammam and Krishna districts. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is located on the borders of Guntur and Nalgonda districts. The edifice of this dam was completed in the year 1966. This mighty dam reaches to a staggering height of 124 meters and is 1 kilometer long. It is built across the Krishna River and has one of the largest networks of canal systems.

A Lake emerges from just behind the dam, which is the third largest artificial lake. The Nagarjuna Konda Island surfaces out of this lake. The historical remnant of a Buddhist settlement has been refurbished and it lies on the right bank of the reservoir. One can see pious stupas, viharas, monasteries and a sacrificial altar in the Buddhist abbey. The Lake is situated 4 kilometers away from the dam. There is also an idol of Lord Nagarjuna, positioned on a tower, very near to the dam. The Dam has a beautiful landscape and looks strikingly scenic.

Besides the lake, there are other attractions around the Dam like Ethipothala waterfalls, and the densely forested Srisailam Wildlife Reserve. There is also an exquisite museum, located near the dam that can be reached by boat.

Getting there

Road :
Located at 150 km from Hyderabad. Well connected by Road.

Rail : 20 kms from Macherla.

Air : Hyderabad Airport.

Getting around : You can visit getting around nearest palaces
Anupu: To prevent submersion of the outstanding structures in the valley, a rare feat of reconstruction of the remains was taken up. Anupu, 4 km from the dam site, was chosen for relocation of a Buddhist University.

Nagarjunakonda: As the area was threatened with submergence by the reservior, an Archaeological Survey team made determined efforts to virtually trasplant nine monuments from the valley onto Nagarjunakonda.

The hill forms an Island in the middle of the reservoir. A museum at Nagarjunakonda contains, Buddhadatu or Buddhas relics excavated from the valley.

Tiger sanctuary: The largest wildlife sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh lies between Nagarjunasagar and upstream Srisailam. Spreadover 3,500 sq.km, it encompasses thickly wooded hills in five districts - Nalgonda, Kurnool, Mahboobnagar, Guntur and Prakasam.

History
Situated on a distance of 150 kms from Hyderabad in Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is constructed on the river Krishna. The place lies to the south east of Hyderabad and is bounded by other important districts like Medak, Mahabubnagar, Khammam and Rangareddy.
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is the world's tallest masonry dam which is built across Krishna River in Nagarjuna Sagar. It is a 1 km long dam with a height of 124 metres. The construction of the dam was completed in 1966 with a total expenditure of 1300 crore, and the dam water was released by Indira Gandhi in 1967. It is one of the earliest hydro-electric and irrigation projects of India and is currently serving Nalgonda District, Prakasham District, Khammam District and Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh by providing water to the farmers for irrigation. Its hydro electric plant has a power generation capacity of 815.6 MW with 8 units.
